Lateral flow tests, also known as lateral flow immunochromatographic assays, are simple devices intended to detect the presence of a SARS-CoV-2 antigens, in a liquid sample without the need for specialized and costly equipment.

They show if an individual may currently have the COVID-19 virus.

• Tests are carried out by taking a simple nose swab specimen.  Results are ready in just 15 minutes (vs 2/3 days for a PCR test result)
• These tests  can be used to identify asymptomatic individuals who may unknowingly have the virus; enabling those who test positive, and their contacts, to self-isolate.
• Twice weekly testing is recommended, to avoid false negative readings, and to identify where a PCR test may be required.
